Celebrate a Spanish New Year seeing the Jewels of Catalonia

In addition to miles of sandy beaches, Calella offers a tree-lined promenade and a quaint old town centre. There are many shops to spend all your Christmas money and bars in which to enjoy a glass of sangria or a cerveza in the winter sunshine. A walk up to the clifftop lighthouse at the end of town affords especially beautiful views along the coast. Perhaps explore some of Catalonia’s highlights. Nearby, the bustling regional capital, Barcelona, offers something for all to discover. History lovers will enjoy the Gothic old quarter or historic Montjuic. Art enthusiasts can discover Barcelona’s famous art and architecture, from Picasso, Gaudi and Miro to name just a few.

Spectacular Scenery and Sparkling bubbly

You can also head into the mountains and discover the famous hill-top monastery of Montserrat. The stunning church is home to one of Europe’s few Black Madonnas and the celebrated boys’ choir. Furthermore, what better place to buy some festive fizz than in Catalonia’s Cava factories! Discover how the sparkling wine is made, and enjoy a tasting too. Perhaps purchase a bottle for your celebrations or to take home. Alternatively, enjoy the sights of the other coastal towns and scenic coves of the nearby Costa Brava.

On 31st December, enjoy a special New Year’s Eve dinner to round off the old year. With much to see and do, Calella proves a great base to discover the exciting Catalonia region and celebrate as you welcome in the New Year!

Montserrat and the Cava Houses

Today, why not take a drive up the steep, winding mountain roads to the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat? Located near the top of the 4,000-foot mountain, it is home to about 80 monks. The Basilica and Monastery is Catalonia’s most important religious retreat and is home to the ‘Black Madonna’, one of only around 500 in Europe. The basilica also holds one of the monastery’s most noted attractions, the 50-member Escolanía, one of the oldest and most renowned boys’ choirs in Europe, dating from the 13th century.

Return via the Freixenet Cava House for a tour and tasting session. Cava is the local version of sparkling wine, produced only in the Catalonian hills. Freixenet is one of the best well known cava brands, not just for its excellent cava but for its Christmas adverts starring a different celebrity every year! Discover the history of the brand, the production and bottling process, enjoy a tasting and perhaps buy some fizz to bring in the New Year!
