A day of Sepulchres and Sovereigns
Highgate Cemetery
Jenny from the Day Trips Department and Claire from the Sales team recently went to discover what lies behind an usual day trip idea, the Highgate Cemetery in London. It certainly lived up to expectations, that even on a bleak February day it had a tranquil and welcoming atmosphere. Groups can enjoy a fascinating tour of the West Cemetery (admission by guided tour only). Your knowledgeable guide will tell you the stories of the memorials and how the cemetery came to be. Once you have admired the old and new mausoleums, you can cross over to the East cemetery to visit the final resting places of some famous historical figures such as Karl Marx and George Eliot. It is reputed to be haunted so maybe your group should depart when the light begins to fade….
A Royal Residence at Hever
From Highgate we visited Hever Castle, famous family home to Henry VIII second wife Anne Boleyn. It is a small but beautiful property set in the most amazing landscaped grounds. We even had a photo opportunity with Queen Anne herself! In February they have a snow drop walk which is a lovely introduction to the gardens. To include Hever in a short break visit, Castles and Gardens of Kent. A day trip idea will be coming very soon!
