Krakow at New Year: A Fairy Tale Winter in Poland’s City of Culture

Take a group tour to Krakow and see in the new year surrounded by the majesty of Poland’s cultural heartland and former royal capital.

New Year’s is regularly known as Sylwester in Poland. Disappointingly, however, the name derives from former Bishop of Rome, Saint Sylwester and not a lisping cat or Philadelphia boxer. Nevertheless, people take to the city’s beautiful squares to celebrate, but, with Carnival starting the next day, the party doesn’t stop at midnight.

Sylwester in the City

Krakow in the winter is a city beset with fairy tale magic. The warming aromas of Polish specialities like pierogi and kietbasa float enticingly through the crisp winter air. Begloved hands warm themselves on mugs of spiced wine against the golden glow of the old town’s markets and cafes. Krakow welcomes you with open arms, inviting you to adore it.

Not just a city, an atmosphere.

Krakow is a city of unusually effortless beauty. While it boasts some incredible attractions such as the Wieliczka Salt Mines, Wawel Castle and St Mary’s Basilica, Krakow’s charm is woven inextricably into the fabric of the city streets. Showcasing each of Europe’s great architectural styles, Krakow creates a unique and diverse atmosphere of timelessness and modernity. It is truly a distinctive city.

The city’s old town is listed as a UNESCO heritage site in its entirety and the second you step through the eternal Floriańska gate, you’ll see exactly why.

The Subterraneans

Of Krakow’s attractions, the most impressive must be the salt mines. Welcoming tourists since 1722, the 327-metre deep mines are one of Poland’s most popular tourist sites. 300-km of tunnels connect extraordinary and extravagantly carved subterranean chapels – including the lavish Chapel of St Kinga – and salt water lakes.

The mine is the oldest operational salt mine in the world and – featuring chandeliers and statues carved from the salt – a testament to the spirit of human industry and creativity.

Marauder got your tongue?

The political and cultural capital of Poland during its 16th century golden age, Wawel Castle is a symbol of national identity akin to the Arc de Triomphe or Brandenburg Gate. The renaissance castle is split into five sections, with the State Rooms and Royal Private Apartments the most striking.

Standing watchfully over Krakow’s ornate central square, St Mary’s Basilica is known for it’s hourly bugle call. The call stops short as a nod to the story of a town crier killed by an arrow as he attempted to trumpet a warning to the city of oncoming invaders. Home to the world’s largest late-gothic altarpiece, St Mary’s is a stunning Krakovian centrepiece.

Krakow is a special place to visit year-round, but there’s something particularly beautiful about the city in the winter. It makes for a truly unique New Year experience and is the perfect place to make new memories.
