Among Europe’s smallest nations, Luxembourg is often passed over when thinking of places for a holiday. We think that is frankly scandalous. The deep green valleys of Luxembourg boast a melting pot of history and culture combining the best of France, Germany and Belgium. Staying in the capital, Luxembourg City, you’ll have plenty of time to discover the riches of this Grand Duchy.

The Capital of the Grand Duchy

Day two gives the option to head deeper in Luxembourg to its capital. Built among the deep gorges cut by the Alezette and Pétreusse rivers, Luxembourg City is a cosmopolitan mix of cobbled streets, cafes, shops and restaurants. The city pulses with history, from the Grand Ducal Palace to the complex Bock Casemates tunnel network. The tunnels, dug into the cliffs by a mixture of Spanish, French and Austrian settlers, have played host to slaughterhouses, granaries and WWII shelters. The city’s UNESCO listed old town contrast with the modernity of Luxembourg’s financial and EU institutions. It is the perfect metaphor for Luxembourg City’s continued relevance not blighting its old world charm. After a day of walking along the medieval Chemin de Corniche fortifications high above the city, you can kick back among the comforts and diversity of modern life.

Is Luxembourg taking your fancy? Maybe you’re looking for something a little longer. Check out another of our trips to the Grand Duchy.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1

Travel to Luxembourg

Start your journey and travel to Dover for the ferry crossing to Calais. Enjoy the picturesque Belgian Ardennes as we travel through the low countries to our hotel in the delightful capital of Luxembourg.

Day 2

Discover Luxembourg City

Today, we explore Luxembourg City to discover the capital of the Grand Duchy, perhaps starting with a guided tour or just explore at your own leisure. The city was built amid deep gorges cut by the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers. For impressive views of the town, take a walk along the Chemin de Corniche promenade, situated high on the ramparts of the medieval fortifications. Perhaps visit the vast Bock Casemates tunnel network that encompasses a dungeon, prison and the Archaeological Crypt. See the Ducal Palace and explore the cobbled streets with their cosmopolitan mix of shops, bars and restaurants.

Day 3

Vianden

This morning, travel to Vianden and learn all about this little town on a guided tour. Walk down to the River Our to see one of Luxembourg’s most photogenic scenes. Towering over the town and river is the imposing Vianden Castle. Dating from the 10th Century, the castle fell into ruins in the 18th Century. Today, now fully restored, it’s one of Luxembourg’s most visited attractions. Being based in the town, you’ll get a peaceful morning visit! The cobbled Grand Rue, with its attractive houses and little shops, takes a meandering route up to the castle gates. In the summer months a chairlift takes you high above the castle for spectacular views.

In the afternoon we drive to Grevenmacher on the Moselle to visit the famous Caves Bernard-Massard, the country’s main producer of traditional sparkling wines. Here, they use the ‘traditional Luxembourg method’ to create their famous wines. Enjoy a tour and three glasses of wine.

Day 4

Return to the UK

The time has come to depart from Luxembourg and return to the UK via the Channel ports.
