Luxembourg: culture, history and wine

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a country sharing the languages and culture of neighbouring France, Germany and Belgium. It’s a beautiful destination during any season and well worth a visit! Despite being one of the smallest sovereign states in Europe, the country is bursting with history, culture and picturesque scenery. The Ardennes countryside boasts forests, rivers, valleys, vineyards and quaint little villages. Fine food and drink are everywhere including special beers still brewed by Trappist monks deep in the Ardennes forests. Historically, the famous Battle of Bulge took place in this very region on the 18th December 1944. Therefore, you will find many monuments dedicated to this battle located throughout the area.

Discover the stunning surroundings of Luxembourg

Located by the German border, Vianden is the perfect base for this tour. In close proximity to both Luxembourg City and the German border, it’s a great starting point to explore the country’s capital as well as the German Moselle valley. Yet Vianden is also an impressive city in its own right. Famous for its castle, the city sits on a vast river and is surrounded by luscious greenery. Luxembourg City, a fortified town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is always worth a visit, while the Bernard-Massard vineyard in nearby Grevenmacher offers guided tours and wine tastings.

Experience the beautiful sights of Germany’s oldest town, Trier. Visit the famous Porta Nigra gate, the medieval town square and the ruins of the amphitheatre and baths. Furthermore, it is here that winegrowers produce top international wines. Scattered with many vineyards, which have contributed greatly to establishing its fine international reputation, the wider Moselle Valley is one of the principal tourist destinations of Germany. Fine wines, the oldest Roman city in Germany and beautiful countryside make this an irresistible destination.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1

Travel to Luxembourg

Start your journey and travel to Dover for the ferry crossing to Calais. Enjoy the picturesque Belgian Ardennes as we travel through the low countries to our hotel in the delightful little town of Vianden in Luxembourg.

Day 2

Vianden and Wine Tasting at Bernard-Massard

This morning, explore Vianden and learn all about it on a guided tour. Walk down to the River Our to see one of Luxembourg’s most photogenic scenes. Towering over the town and river is the imposing Vianden Castle. Dating from the 10th Century, the castle fell into ruins in the 18th Century. Today, now fully restored, it’s one of Luxembourg’s most visited attractions. See the cobbled Grand Rue, with its attractive houses and little shops, takes a meandering route up to the castle gates. In the summer months a chairlift takes you high above the castle for spectacular views.

In the afternoon we drive to Grevenmacher on the Moselle to visit the famous Caves Bernard-Massard, the country’s main producer of traditional sparkling wines. Here, they use the ‘traditional Luxembourg method’ to create their famous wines. Enjoy a tour and three glasses of wine.

Day 3

Luxembourg City Sightseeing

Today we travel into Luxembourg City to explore the capital of the Grand Duchy, starting with a guided tour. The city was built amid deep gorges cut by the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers. For impressive views of the town, take a walk along the Chemin de Corniche promenade, situated high on the ramparts of the medieval fortifications. Perhaps visit the vast Bock Casemates tunnel network that encompasses a dungeon, prison and the Archaeological Crypt. See the Ducal Palace and explore the cobbled streets with their cosmopolitan mix of shops, bars and restaurants. If all of that is a bit too energetic, why not take an open top bus tour or the little tourist road train?

Day 4

Trier and the Moselle

Just across the border into Germany is the Roman town of Trier. This morning we take a guided walking tour to see the famous Porta Nigra, a large and imposing Roman city gate built between 186AD and 200AD. We also visit the ruins of the town’s amphitheatre and Roman baths.

After free time in the town we head for the Mullerthal Valley, a charming region often referred to as ‘Little Switzerland’. We then stop in Echternach to see one of the largest Roman villas in what was then north-east Gaul. We return to Vianden via Beaufort and Larochette where there is a castle, fortress ruins, and even a torture chamber!

Day 5

Return to the UK

The time has come to depart from Luxembourg and return to the UK via the Channel ports.
