Suggested Excursions
Tavira, Olhão and Faro
Visit the picturesque town of Tavira, with some 30 churches, medieval castle, historic buildings and delightful river front gardens. Why not spend some time in Olhão, the Algarve’s biggest fishing port, with an active waterfront and pretty, bustling lanes in its old quarters. The flat-roofed, Moorish-influenced neighbourhoods have a North African feel, making it a pleasant place to wander. Continue on to Faro and visit the Cathedral and climb to the mirador for views across the city.
Lagos and Sagres
Explore the west of the Algarve to discover Lagos and Sagres. First head to Lagos, famous for its association with the Portuguese explorers and visit the Church of St Anthony with its intricately carved walls and altar covered in gold. Continue west to the fishing village of Sagres, with its hulking fortress offering striking views over the sheer cliffs.
Silves and Monchique
The ancient city of Silves with its Moorish Castle and the 13th century cathedral are worth the visit. Silves is an enchanting town littered with orange and lemon trees, sitting on the banks of the Arade River. History is everywhere to be found in Silves, reminding you of its affluent and bold past as a Moorish capital (“Xelb”), whose importance lay in the fact that it was the main access to the inland areas of the Algarve thanks to its river location, although nowadays the river is too silted up for large vessels to use. Afterwards, perhaps head north to Monchique – with it’s lush green vegetation, winding roads, tiny white-washed houses perched on the hill sides, birdsong, the scent of eucalyptus trees, Monchique offers a contrast to the coastal towns already explored.
