A Taste of Devon and Cornwall

26th April 2016

An early start today as I headed towards Buckfastleigh, South Devon, to experience the 30 minute steam journey to Totnes along the beautiful and unspoilt valley of the River Dart. I was also privileged to have a ride on the footplate, whilst the engine did its turnaround for the return journey, so a big thank you to Dick Wood – PR & Business Development Manager.

Overnight accommodation was at the delightful Dartington Hall, a Grade I listed property located in the stunning South Hams, the largest medieval manor house in the west of England. A unique location, easily accessible within driving reach of Bristol, Exeter and Plymouth.

The 4* accommodation located around a 14th century medieval Courtyard, offers a mix of heritage and comfort and the perfect setting. The inspiring variety of ancient and modern buildings, set within a 1200 acre estate, provide a glorious setting offering excellent facilities and a range of comfortable, well-equipped rooms making Dartington Hall the perfect venue.

I attended the  Steve Reed Devon Group Travel Roadshow which was held at the National Aquarium on the waterfront Plymouth, who openly admitted that they historically had not promoted themselves to the group market. Here you can buy a dual ticket to include the Plymouth Gin Distillery.

I also stayed at the 3* Kilbirnie hotel in Newquay. Coach parking is available at the hotel and they will place cones out to prevent cars taking up the space. This hotel is a short walk from the shops and has an excellent bar area complete with dance floor.

Finally I went to have a look at the Eden Project, an excellent attraction for all types of groups.  This Project is about a lot more than the Rainforest & Mediterranean Biomes. There are outdoor gardens, the core which is home to exhibitions, art schools programmes and the outdoor stage, where evening seasonal concerts are held. The food served looked to be of excellent quality and visitors can see this being prepared in the open Eden kitchens, viewed from the link that connects the Biomes.

The main entrance is  short downhill walk from the coach parking area, however a shuttle service does run back to the coach park. Accessibility is for all types and motorised scooters are available once in the main area.
