Dating as far back as the 5th Century BC, Athens has had a long, fascinating history of being a cultural metropolis. The city has played host to the birth civilizations that have given us democracy, mythology, drama, and philosophy. Throughout this 2,500 year old history a multitude of invaders have come and gone however, one constant remained; the city itself. The symbol of the city, the great Parthenon has long stood atop Mount Pentelicus, serving as a constant reminder of this ancient past. However, it is not just in the citadel of Acropolis you will find evidenceof this; the city is full of architectural and historical gems. Be sure to stroll along the most beautiful street in Athens: Dionysiou Areopagitou. See neo-classical and art deco architecture on one side of the street, as you tick off ancient monuments like the Theatre of Dionysus (the birthplace of Greek drama) and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus (still used as a summer venue) on the other. With bountiful classical sights and world heritage landmarks, you are sure to stay busy throughout your visit.
See the longest coastline of any capital in Europe
Beyond the centre, lies the Attica Peninsula, home to some incredible beaches. It is clear to see how such beauty can inspire mythology that has stood the test of time. Along this coast, see such monuments as the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. Built during 444–440 BC, it is one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens. Then, when the Athens’ legendary sunsets signal the golden hour be sure to head towards Piraeus harbour; the gateway to the Greek Islands. Here, you will find a legion of seaside restaurants. From Michelin star restaurants to casual hot spots loved by locals. This is a chance not to miss out on the incredible Athenian cuisine. Influenced by thousands years of trade and playing host to occupiers such as the Ottomans, Byzantines, Venetians and many more, their mark has, not only, created a cultural melting pot, but most importantly, a delicious dish or two.
Don’t miss the opportunity to see one of the greatest cities on earth and perhaps combine this trip to see other cities of the heart of Greece tour.
