Day 1
Travel to Chatsworth and your hotel
Today we travel to Chatsworth, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The house contains works of art that span 4,000 years, from ancient Roman and Egyptian sculpture, and masterpieces by Rembrandt, Reynolds and Veronese, to work by outstanding modern artists, including Lucian Freud, Edmund de Waal and David Nash. There are more than over 30 rooms to explore, from the magnificient Painted Hall, regal State Rooms, restored Sketch Galleries and beautiful Sculpture Gallery. After visiting the house, take time to explore the impressive gardens including the historic Cascade, the Victorian rock garden and the maze.
Day 2
Bakewell
Think of the Peak District and Bakewell is likely to spring to mind. With many historic buildings, attractive courtyards, independent shops and cafés, and a location on the River Wye, it’s no wonder the town is such a popular destination. But for many people, Bakewell means the confection named after the town. In the 19th century a cook at the Rutland Arms in the town was baking a jam tart. A misunderstanding over the recipe resulted in the now famous Bakewell Pudding. Most visitors to the town sample this culinary delight, as well as its sister confection, the similar, but different, Bakewell Tart.
