Beginning in the capital city of Athens, explore the ancient delights of this intriguing city before beginning your island hop in the playground of the Greek Gods. Dating as far back as the 5th Century BC, Athens has had a long, fascinating history of being a cultural metropolis. The city has played host to the birth civilizations that have given us democracy, mythology, drama, and philosophy. Often described as an open-air museum with an abundance of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, neo-classical and art deco architecture as well as ancient monuments.
Mykonos; A Cosmopolitan Paradise
Known in the summer for its party atmosphere, this island has so much more to offer. The old town is a maze of narrow walkways surrounded by white washed houses. A must visit area is Little Venice, a charming village, famous for its windmills. Here, the buildings overhang the pristine blue waters below, formerly fishing houses, these houses originally belonged to shipping merchants which gave them direct access to the sea. Being built right on the water, you can see how it is reminiscent of the Italian city of Venice. Further exploration takes back out to sea to small Archipelago of Delos, the mythological birthplace of Apollo. Encompassing the island are the ruins of Doric temples, markets, an amphitheatre, houses with mosaics and the iconic Terrace of the Lions statues.
Santorini; The Precious Gem of the Aegean
The Crescent-Shaped Idyllic Island of Santorini is probably the most well-known of the Greek Islands. Forever shaped by a volcanic erupton in the 16th Century B.C its rugged landscape has become a thing of beauty. The principal towns of Fira and Oia, are home to the instantly recognisable whitewash buildings that cling to the cliff edge below an underwater caldera (crater) creating a panoramic vista of pure romanticism. However, the islands popularity isn’t solely for the views, the island is a true culinary paradise! Treat yourself to some of the famous traditional products grown here; cherry tomatoes, white egg plants, fava, caper and a special kind of fresh goat cheese are all true delicacies of this rich land. However, it is the wines that are produced here that are so exceptional and unlike anywhere else in the world as the grapes are grown in the volcanic soil giving it a rich earthy taste.
Discover these islands of paradise and discover their history and culture without forgetting their traditional cuisine that burst with flavour native to the islands. There is so much to see and do here however, click on the links to discover more of Athens and the Heart of Greece.
