Thought to be founded by a Norwegian exile, Ingólfur Arnarson, the city of Reykjavik was founded in 871 AD. Many contest that Irish monks had been living on the island before this time, however it was Ingólfur who washed ashore the steam filled bay arising from the geothermal vents located around the island. Hence forth naming it Reykjavik translated as Smokey Bay. Many settlers coming from the Scandinavian countries throughout the centuries, it wasn’t until World War II, when under British protection that it began to flourish. Then in the 1950’s when Iceland, became fully independent after centuries under Norwegian and Danish control, Reykjavik rose to become the great city we see today. Mostly smokeless, due to the adaptation of the thermal energy produced by the vents, Reykjavik is now the epicentre of Icelandic culture and hot spot for tourists. With cultural institutions such as museums and festivals, as well as being surrounded by the volcanic wild, there is always something to see and do in the Icelandic Capital.
