Day 1
Travel to your hotel
Day 2
Holy Island (Lindisfarne) and Scenic Drive.
This morning, we take a scenic journey along the Northumberland coast to cross the tidal causeway to visit Lindisfarne, or Holy Island. The island is home to the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, a unique castle with a Gertrude Jekyll garden and a colony of grey seals. We then travel along the coast taking in the sights of Bamburgh Castle, the one-time seat of the Kings of Northumbria, and the picturesque village of Seahouses.
Day 3
The Alnwick Garden and Alnwick Castle
Alnwick Castle has over 950 years of history to discover, and the origins of the Castle date back to the Norman period. It is the countries second largest inhabited castle. Explore the world famous interior and exteriors (as featured Harry Potter, Downton Abbey). We next travel to its famous neighbour, the unique and contemporary Alnwick Garden.
Day 4
Hadrian’s Wall, Chesters Roman Fort, Roman Vindolanda, Hexham Abbey
Today we follow part of the route of Hadrian’s Wall, with an opportunity to see a section of the actual remaining structure. We visit Chesters Roman Fort to gain an insight into the life of a soldier living on Rome’s northern frontier. At Roman Vindolanda there’s a world famous collection of artefacts. Our journey takes us through the Roman town of Corbridge, and a stop at Hexham Abbey.
Day 5
Travel home
The White Swan, Alnwick
The White Swan Hotel is a charming 300 year old coaching inn, set in the heart of the historic market town of Alnwick and only a stone’s throw from Alnwick Gardens. All 55 bedrooms and suites can be reached by the magnificent aft staircase, salvaged from the illustrious British vessel, the RMS Olympic. The hotel is the ideal base for discovering the unspoilt hills, coastline and historic castles of Northumberland. There is no lift at the hotel. Coach parking is in the public coach park at the back off the hotel, coaches can drop and pick up at the front of the hotel.
