Suggested itinerary by coach
Day 1
Travel to North Wales
Start the surprises with a stop-off at Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Llangollen or Bodelwyddan Castle on the way.
Day 2
Llandudno and Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens
This morning we discover some of Llandudno’s secrets and surprises on a short guided coach tour that reveals the town’s links with Alice in Wonderland. After free time to explore the town we cross the Menai Straight to ‘find’ the remarkable Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens.
Day 3
Snowdon Mountain Railway and Caernarfon
Today we travel over the spectacular Llanberis Pass for a train ride to the top of Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales. In the afternoon we visit Caernarfon where there’s free time to explore the castle and the old town.
Trains to the Summit begin in May, weather-permitting. From Mid-March to May services run to Clogwyn which is 3/4 of the way up Mount Snowdon. There are toilet facilities at Llanberis and the Summit Visitor Centre but none at Clogwyn.
Day 4
Portmeirion, Ffestiniog Railway and Trefriw Woollen Mills
Created by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975, the unique and altogether magnificent Italianate village of Portmeirion combines spectacular gardens and architectural surprises at every turn. In the afternoon we take the narrow gauge, steam-hauled Ffestiniog Railway to Blaenau Ffestiniog, the slate capital of Wales. We then call in at the family-run Trefriw Woollen Mills where there’s an opportunity to buy traditional Welsh woollens and other locally crafted souvenirs.
Day 5
Return home
Ask the Greatdays team for ideas for stop-offs on the way.
