Day 2
Rockingham Castle and Georgian Stamford
This morning we travel to Rockingham Castle near Corby for a private tour. A family home since 1544, it was originally built around 1070 on the instructions of William the Conqueror. Since then the castle has welcomed many kings and queens including Richard the Lionheart. We then travel to the delightful Georgian town of Stamford. Sir Walter Scott proclaimed it as “the finest stone town in England” with more than 600 listed buildings of mellow limestone including five medieval churches.
Day 3
Nene Valley Railway and Peterborough
Today we take a trip back in time on the Nene Valley Railway for a relaxing journey in restored, wooden panelled coaches for a 15-mile return journey from Peterborough to the country station at Yarwell. This standard gauge heritage railway has featured in many television series and in the James Bond films Octopussy and Goldeneye. Not shaken, but hopefully stirred, we then make our way into the centre of Peterborough for a private tour of Peterborough Cathedral, one of the finest Norman cathedrals in England, one of the most significant medieval abbeys in the country, and the burial place of two queens. If time permits there’s free time for a spot of retail therapy before we return to the hotel.
