Day 2
Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s Birthplace and river cruise
This morning we visit Stratford-upon-Avon and Shakespeare’s Birthplace, a timber-framed townhouse in the centre of the town. A short journey away by coach is the childhood home of Mrs Shakespeare, the world-famous Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. At the age of 18, Shakespeare married Anne, the daughter of a local landowner. There’s an opportunity to visit Shakespeare’s grave in Holy Trinity Church, one of England’s finest and most visited parish churches. After lunch we join our boat for a relaxing afternoon sightseeing cruise on the River Avon, with unique views of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Holy Trinity Church and the surrounding countryside.
Day 3
Tour of the Cotswold
Today we take one of the classic English tours around the villages and small market towns of the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. The area, which is centred on the Cotswold Hills, and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is best known for the famous Cotswold stone, a yellow limestone which, when weathered, becomes a delightful honey or golden colour. Our route is likely to include Shipston-on-Stour, Chipping Campden, Moreton-in-Marsh, Broadway, Stow-on-the-Wold and the ‘Little Venice’ of the Cotswolds, Bourton-on-the-Water.
