True Slovakia – Bratislava, Kosice & The Tatra Mountains – by Air
Located in the heart of Europe, Slovakia is a land of castles, mountains and pretty villages. Ever since the Middle Ages, this land has been considered a well trodden path for travellers crossing from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean, however, most of the country is a hidden jewel to UK travellers. The Capital city Bratislava draws visitors to its resplendent old town but Slovakia shines brightest for lovers of the outdoors. Within its national parks are landscapes magnificently shaped by the rivers and mountains that dominate your view.
Beyond the luscious countryside is the eastern metropolis of Košice, a real charmer of a city. Also, Košice is easy to navigate as it is mostly concentrated in the historical core of the town. The spindle-shaped Hlavné námestie square of Košice is the heart of the town and rightly considered one of the most beautiful squares in Slovakia. It is closed to traffic and surrounded by numerous wonderful historical buildings. The square is dominated by the monumental Gothic Cathedral of St. Elisabeth. This building, rather isolated from the rest of the square, is the largest church of Slovakia.
Further east you will find the Tokaj wine region, unfurled across thinly populated countryside. Home to some of Slovakia and Hungary’s most beloved varieties of wine. The region is spread over a romantic landscape of cellar labyrinths. The region is famous for for its opulent red wine and whilst here, it’d be rude not to try a tipple or two.
