Sognefjord & Hardangerfjord; King and Queen of the Fjords
With more than 1,000 fjords around Norway, 10 of which are frequented regularly by cruise ships, it’s not surprising that tourists wonder where to go and which fjords to see. However, the undisputed king and Queen of the fjords are the two largest; Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord. Sognefjord is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway, lying right in the heart of Fjord Norway. Sognefjord offers a broad range of natural phenomena, with the widest and narrowest of fjords, lush valleys, towering mountain ranges and blue glaciers. You will also find anything from isolated mountain farms to quaint, picturesque fruit-growing villages and modern towns. Running all the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Hardangervidda plateu, the Hardangerfjord, the Queen of the Fjords, is the second largest fjord in Norway. With Panoramic views with postcard-perfect photo opportunities the fjords, waterfalls and glaciers, this region is truly one of the most beautiful areas in Norway.
Bergen; Norway’s beautifully preserved Second City
Norway’s second city, is also considered the gateway to the Fjords. Easy access to nature means you’re minutes away from complete tranquillity. The city may be the second largest in Norway, however it has the essence of a small charming town. The white houses with maroon roof buildings clamber up the mountainsides, overlooking the sea, blending in with the foilage come autumn time. The UNESCO World Heritage site Bryggen, “The Hanseatic Wharf”, is the most obvious remnant from the time Bergen used to be the centre of trade between Norway and the rest of Europe, once making it the country’s capital. Today, the wharf houses a museum, shops, galleries, and restaurants, and is a focal point for both locals and visitors.
With pristine waters, dense forest and Cascading waterfalls, travelling across the stunning Norwegian landscape reveals spectacular new vistas at every turn and gives you the opportunity to stop-off and see the ‘real’ Norway in a seven day nutshell.
