Day 1
Travel to South Wales
Travel to your hotel in the Newport area, perhaps visiting the Wye Valley and Tintern Abbey on the way.
Day 2
National Roman Legion Museum, Roman Baths, Abergavenny and Big Pit
This morning we travel to Caerleon to see the fascinating National Roman Legion Museum and Roman Baths. Discover why Wales was a popular posting for the Roman army and see examples of graffiti of its day. We then drive to the historic market town of Abergavenny, where there’s free time for shopping and lunch. After lunch we visit Big Pit, once one of Wales’ largest collieries, which closed in 1980. There is plenty to do including the mining galleries. A former miner will lead you through the underground caverns to reveal the secrets and stories of life at the coal face (underground tour involves dark, enclosed space with uneven surfaces).
Day 3
Brecon Mountain Railway and Penderyn Whisky
Today there’s a ride on the steam-hauled narrow gauge Brecon Mountain Railway into the Brecon Beacons National Park. In the afternoon, we arrive at the Penderyn Whisky Visitor Centre. A private tour will reveal the manufacturing secrets before a tutored tasting gives you the opportunity to sample a selection of products from the only whisky distillery in Wales.
Day 4
